RN&RM Scottish Fly Fishing Open 2011

The Scottish Command Fly Fishing Open 2011 Championship took place at Lake of Menteith on the 5th July 2011

Twenty anglers took to the water and unfortunately due to service commitments 4 anglers had to cancel on the day.

Weather was good, warm & overcast. Unfortunately the hot humid weather over the past week had put a lot of the fish down in deeper water. The majority of the day remained dry and clear with a light South to S/W wind.

A few early fish were caught by Sergeant "Stu" Law & WO Barry Prout . As the day progressed the Roman Bay shore seemed to producing the majority of fish and a lot of anglers took full advantage of the rich pickings (fish were tight in on the shore). Other hot areas were Gateside Bay and the Rookery. Most of the trout we're being caught on red & black buzzers, red diawl bach, Red Cormorant and various Blob patterns.

14 trout were caught including 1 x blue trout for a total bay weight 46lbs 8ozs averaging 3lb 3ozs per fish.

Best Novice went to Rev Richard Rowe Chaplin HMNB Clyde.

Best fish was won by MOD Police Barry Prout HMNB Clyde . Rainbow trout 3lbs 8ozs.

Runner-Up Scottish Fly fishing Open 2011 Sgt "Stu" Law Aberdeen Royal Navy Careers Office.

2011 Scottish Fly Fishing Champion was PO "Mal" Malcolm 2 trout for 4lbs 11ozs MOD Caledonia

PO "Mal" Malcolm added, the conditions were hard going but i didn't think 2 trout would've been good enough to win the prestigious award for a third year in a row. I feel on top of the world being crowned Scottish Command Champion 2011 to go along with the 2010 & 2009 Scottish Titles. I look forward meeting up with the rest of the RN & RM Team in Sept for the Inter-Command Championship at Rutland Water and hopefully we can out fish the RAF and the Army.

Special thanks to Glasgow Angling Centre, Alex and Jamie (Glasgow) for donating over £200 worth of prizes which were greatly received by all.

Special thanks to the staff at Lake of Menteith for their hospitality, especially Quinn and loaning out of additional equipment.

Special thanks to RN Photographer LA (Phot) "Scouse" Sutton for capturing the moment.
