12 stalwart members endured the autumn gales to vie for the Autumn Cup at Moorhen Farm Fishery near Warnford in the Meon Valley. This was a change of venue brought about by the lack of catch and release facilities at Duncton Mill, our usual venue for this event, and the poor results there last year when half the contestants blanked.

Despite the heavy rain showers everyone caught at least one fish and Ted Grant landed a notable 7. Winner of both the Autumn Cup and Ming’s mug was Robby Pearce with a 7 pounder helping make up his winning total of 14 lb 8oz. This was closely followed by Ted Grant with 14lb 4oz to take the Runner Up trophy donated by Mike Britchfield. Detailed results are shown in the table above.

The fishery management provided a luxury service both on the bank where fish were despatched, weighed, bagged and put in the fridge by the excellent 'ghillie' service and constantly available tea and coffee provided in the lodge. Soup and a roll were also provided at lunchtime to stave off hypothermia as part of the service. Thanks go to Mark and Wendy Rogers and their staff for providing the facilities to make the day most enjoyable despite the heavy weather.

Fish fell to a variety of flies and lures though particularly successful were minkies, cat's whiskers and bright lures. Occasional fish fell to dries offered by the desperate to those fish seen to be topping. The fish tended to be bunched in the middle of the 2 divisions of the lake but could be reached from several 'pegs' and the 'catch and move on' policy ensured that all had a fair chance of getting amongst them.

This was our last meeting of the season and I look forward to seeing all back on the bank in March 2009. I hope to be able to book back into our old favourite venues and try out a couple of different ones. Any suggestions regarding possible 'new' waters are more than welcome.

Wishing you all a merry Christmas and a prosperous, successful New Year.
